Footage Worth Building an Avatar From
Set camera height, light, clothing and resting expression before recording the footage a personal avatar will be built from.
What it is for
Covers the recording session a personal avatar is built from: camera height, light, wardrobe, posture and the face you hold between sentences. Use it before recording, because none of it can be changed once the avatar exists. It also settles who owns the likeness while that is still an easy conversation.
The skill
Whatever you record is what the avatar is stuck with. Fix the room before you record a second of it. Frame and light: - Camera at eye level. A laptop camera under your chin makes every video you ever make look like a call you took by accident. - One large soft light in front of you — a window at forty-five degrees works. A ceiling light drops shadows into your eye sockets, and the avatar keeps them. - Plain background, and stand well away from it so you are not casting a shadow onto it. - Plain mid-tone clothing. Fine stripes and small checks shimmer, jewellery swings and catches light, and both survive into every future video. - Nothing loose: no hair falling across the face, no lanyard, no glasses angled to bounce the light straight back. Performance: - Sit or stand the way you want to appear for the next year. That posture is not adjustable afterwards. - Keep gestures small and entirely inside the frame. Hands that leave the frame come back wrong. - Rest your face in the expression you want during pauses — slightly warm, mouth closed. Whatever your face does between sentences is what it does in every pause, forever. - Speak at the pace you want your videos to run. Then, before you build a series on it: - Record everything in one session: same clothes, same light, same lens. - Test the finished avatar with your ugliest script — a paragraph packed with product names, numbers and acronyms — not with a friendly sample sentence. - Agree in writing who may use this likeness, for how long, and what happens when the person leaves. It is easy now and impossible later.
