A Story Bible the Prose Obeys
What goes in each field so generated scenes carry your characters and your rules — and why rerolling never fixes a vague bible.
What it is for
Generated chapters follow the story bible, not the chapter you wrote last night — so vague fields produce vague scenes no amount of rerolling will fix. This says what belongs in each field, in what voice, and when to update it. Use it before generating prose, and again the moment your draft contradicts your notes.
The skill
Fill the story bible before you generate chapters, not after the first three disappoint you. Generation reads the bible; it does not read your mind, and it does not remember what you decided in chapter two. Write every field as instructions to a co-writer who has never read your book. Synopsis: the spine only. Who wants what, what stands in the way, what it costs them. Cut the atmosphere sentences — atmosphere in a synopsis produces scenes where nothing happens beautifully. Characters: what they want, what they will not do, and how they talk. One line of their real dialogue teaches more than a paragraph of adjectives. Add the contradiction — the brave one who lies, the honest one who steals — or every character comes back as their own job description. Worldbuilding: only the rules the plot leans on. If magic has a price, name the price. If the year matters, name what does not exist yet. The rest is set dressing you can invent while drafting. Style: name two authors, then name one thing you do NOT want — no purple prose, no present tense, no head-hopping. Negative instructions do more work here than positive ones. Outline and beats: write events, not moods. "She finds the letter and burns it" generates a scene. "Tension builds" generates weather. Then keep it true. The moment the draft contradicts the bible — she has a sister now, the city fell in chapter nine — update the field. Generation follows the bible, so a stale one drags every new scene back toward a book you are no longer writing. When a scene comes out wrong three times, stop rerolling. The fix is a field.
