Answers You Can Defend, Not Just Copy
Socratic's homework help now lives inside Google Lens. Explanations, forum answers and videos arrive looking equally authoritative: three checks before you use one.

Socratic is no longer a separate app. Google folded its photograph-a-question homework help into Google Lens, which you reach from the Google app or from Chrome. Everything below applies to what that search hands back. What comes back is a mixture: written explanations, community answers, videos, and pages that merely contain your keywords. They arrive looking equally authoritative. They are not. Check three things before you use anything: 1. Does it answer YOUR question, or a similar one? Similar is the common trap - same topic, different given values, one extra condition, a different assumption. Compare the setup line by line, not the final number. 2. Can you follow every line? A step you accept because it sounds confident is a step you cannot reproduce in an exam. If one line is unexplained, that line is the thing to go and learn. 3. Does it match your class? Notation, method and rounding conventions differ by country and by course. A correct answer in the wrong convention still loses the marks. Two hard rules: - Never copy working you cannot rederive. It is worse than a wrong answer you produced yourself: you learn nothing, and your teacher now believes you understood it. - A video is not a citable source. If sources were asked for, the video's own reference - the textbook, the standard, the paper - is the source. Go and find it. When two results disagree, do not average them and do not pick the confident one. Work the problem both ways and see which one breaks. The one that breaks teaches you more than the one that worked. Failure this prevents: handing in a method you cannot explain when you are asked to explain it.
