One Question in the Frame
A photo is a search query and everything in the frame is a search term. How to crop, and when to type instead.
A routine for the moment you point a camera at a question, not a prompt to
paste. Socratic is no longer a separate app: its own address now takes you to
Google Lens homework help and both store listings are gone, so anything
carrying that name in an app store today is somebody else's app, not Google's.
The discipline below is about the photo, so it holds on whatever surface you
photograph a question with.
A photo is a search query. Everything inside the frame counts as a search
term, including the two questions you did not mean to ask about and the
chapter heading at the top of the page.
Frame one question:
- Crop to a single numbered question and its whole stem — nothing above,
nothing below. Cover the neighbours with a sheet of paper if the layout is
tight.
- Include the diagram, table or graph the question refers to. A question that
says "in the figure above" without the figure is unanswerable, and you get
generic material about the topic instead of help with the question.
- Exclude your own working and any answer you already wrote. It is read as
part of the question, and one wrong line of yours steers everything that
follows.
- Exclude the instructions ("show all working, 6 marks"). Those words are
about exams and contribute nothing about the subject.
When the results come back on the right subject but the wrong idea, the frame
is almost always the cause. Re-crop before you re-ask.
Type it instead of photographing when:
- The question is handwritten, yours or anyone's.
- The meaning sits in a symbol — an exponent, a subscript, an ion charge, a
bar over a letter. Those survive typing and not photography.
- The question is one line long. Typing is faster than aiming.
And ask about the hard noun, not the whole sentence. "Why a solution's boiling
point rises when solute is added" pulls better material than a photograph of
the exam question that happens to be about it.

1. Open the tool and start a new conversation, project or template. 2. Paste the text below wherever the tool keeps standing instructions — usually called system prompt, instructions, or persona. 3. Save it so it applies to every run rather than a single message.
