A Proofread That Leaves Your Voice Alone
Run the checker last, accept one suggestion at a time, and know which four categories of suggestion to argue with.

Run the grammar check last. Fixing commas in a paragraph you are about to cut is the cheapest way to feel productive and stay stuck. Never accept everything at once. Bulk-accept is how a draft comes back grammatical, correct, and no longer written by anybody. Accept without thinking: - Typos, doubled words, agreement, tense slips. - Missing articles and prepositions. If English is your second language this is most of what you need, and the checker is genuinely good at it. - Spacing, capitalisation, punctuation inside quotes. Read before accepting: - Word-choice swaps. The checker does not know your field and will trade a term of art for a friendlier word that means something else. - "Wordiness" and passive-voice flags. Passive is correct when the actor is unknown or irrelevant. Dismiss the flag, keep the sentence. - Anything inside a quotation, a code sample, a URL or a proper name. - Fragments and comma splices you wrote on purpose. Rhythm is not an error. Keep a short list of the words it flags every time and you keep every time — product names, transliterations, your house spellings — and stop arguing the same five items in every draft. Watch for the register drift. Suggestion by suggestion, a checker pulls idiom toward the safe middle, and a paragraph that sounded like a person ends up sounding like a policy. When it is finished, read the piece aloud once. The checker cannot hear that you opened four sentences in a row with the same word — and that, not the commas, is what makes writing sound machine-made.
