Cutouts That Survive a Zoom
Edge-by-edge inspection order for a background removal, plus export rules that stop halos and off-white product shots reaching a listing.
What it is for
A checking routine for background removals that are going onto a real product page. It fixes the order you inspect the edge in, forces the white-versus-grey halo test, and separates the transparent master from the flat exports a marketplace demands. It prevents cutouts that pass at thumbnail size and fall apart the moment a customer zooms.
The skill
Use this before any cutout goes onto a product page. Pick the source photo first. Automatic cutting fails on low contrast: a black bag on a dark sofa costs twenty minutes of hand cleanup that a re-shot frame costs nothing. Never start from a screenshot or a photo re-saved by a chat app - compression noise becomes a fringed edge. Remove the background, then inspect at full zoom in this order: - Hair, fur, fringe, lace, mesh. Automatic edges break here first. - Handles, straps, spouts, buckles, and any hole that should show through. A filled-in gap looks fine as a thumbnail and wrong on the page. - Glass and anything transparent. Decide on purpose whether the new background shows through, then confirm the label is still readable. - Thin things: cables, stems, earring hooks, chair legs. Check the edge twice, once against white and once against mid grey. A halo of the old background is invisible on one and obvious on the other. Repair by hand rather than re-running the automatic cut: - Restore what was eaten, erase what was left, at a small brush size. - Zoom to the edge you are fixing, not to the whole product. Export rules: - Keep the transparent master. Everything else is derived from it. - A marketplace that demands a pure white field wants a flat white export, not the light grey that reads as white on your monitor. - Keep margins even and let the product fill most of the frame. A small product in a huge empty canvas reads as a placeholder image. Ship nothing you have not looked at once at full zoom.
