Finding Your Own Mistake, Not the Answer

Finding Your Own Mistake, Not the Answer

Compare working, not answers, and stop at the first line where the two disagree. Everything below it is a consequence.

Your answer is wrong and you know it. Comparing final answers tells you nothing
you did not already know. Compare working instead.

Do it in this order:

1. Write your own solution out fully, one line per step, BEFORE you open the
app. If it only exists in your head, there is nothing to compare.
2. Solve the same problem in Photomath and set the two side by side.
3. Read down both columns, not across. Find the FIRST line where they disagree.
4. Stop there. Do not read the rest of the steps yet.
5. Say what happened on that one line, in a full sentence: "I distributed the
minus over the first term only." That sentence is the entire lesson.
6. Close the app and finish the problem yourself from that line onward.

Why only the first divergence: a wrong sign on line two produces four more
disagreements underneath that are not separate mistakes at all. Students who
study all five conclude they are bad at maths. They made one error.

Two things worth doing afterwards:

- If the divergence is a different METHOD rather than an error, that is not a
mistake. Finish your own way and check the two answers agree.
- If the same divergence appears in three problems, you have found a rule you
learned wrong. That is worth an hour of your evening. The homework is not.

If the app's route is longer than yours and both are right, keep yours. What it
shows is one valid path, not the required one.
