## Overview

Multi-step workflows go beyond single-action automations — they allow you to chain reads, AI reasoning, writes, and notifications into cohesive pipelines that handle complex business logic automatically.

## Architecture Patterns

### Sequential Chain
Each step feeds into the next:

Step 1: Read customer feedback

Step 2: AI categorizes feedback type

Step 3: Update category property
    ↓
Step 4: If "Critical Bug" → create high-priority task
    ↓
Step 5: Notify engineering team
```

### Parallel Branch
Steps run simultaneously:

    └→ Update content calendar status
```

### Conditional Logic
Different paths based on conditions:

    ├→ IF score > 80: Assign to senior sales

```

## Building Multi-Step Workflows

### Step 1: Map Your Workflow

Before building, sketch the complete flow:
1. What is the trigger?
2. What data does each step need?
3. What decisions need to be made?
4. What outputs are produced?

### Step 2: Build in Stages

Don't try to build everything at once:
1. Build and test Step 1 alone
2. Add Step 2 and test the combination
3. Continue adding steps one at a time
4. Test the full workflow with real data

### Step 3: Handle Edge Cases

Plan for:
- Missing or null property values
- AI output that doesn't match expected format
- External service unavailability
- Circular references or infinite loops

## Example: Client Onboarding Workflow

**Trigger:** New client added to CRM with status "Signed"

**Steps:**
1. AI generates personalized welcome email draft
2. Creates onboarding checklist from template
3. Assigns onboarding tasks to team members
4. Creates first 30-day milestone plan
5. Sends Slack notification to account manager
6. Updates CRM status to "Onboarding"

## Error Handling

Build resilience into workflows:
- Add status properties to track workflow progress
- Log errors in a dedicated "Automation Errors" database
- Build manual override buttons for when automations fail
- Set up monitoring for workflows that haven't run recently

## Best Practices

- Keep individual steps simple and testable
- Use meaningful names for all properties involved
- Document your workflow logic in a page alongside the automation
- Version your workflows — don't modify live workflows without testing
