Grounded Q&A Over Your Own Sources

Grounded Q&A Over Your Own Sources

Setting up a notebook so answers stay inside your documents, and gaps show up as gaps.

notebooklm research documents grounding citations

What it is for

Grounded answering is only useful if a gap in your sources shows up as a gap. This is how to set up a notebook so answers stay inside your documents and the model says when the documents do not cover the question.

The skill

NotebookLM is only as good as the boundary you draw around it. Draw it
deliberately.

Setting up:
- Add sources that answer ONE question set. A notebook holding both the
contract and the marketing deck will blend them, and you will not see it
  happen.
- Give each source a name that says what it is and when it is from. The
citations use these names and a file called `final_v3.pdf` tells you nothing.
- Remove superseded versions. Two drafts of one document produce answers that
  average them.

Asking:
- Ask for the citation every time, and open it. The grounding is the product;
an uncited sentence is the model talking.
- Ask "which sources do NOT mention X?" — this is the question that reveals
what you are missing, and it is one a chat model cannot answer at all.
- For anything numeric, ask for the sentence the number came from, verbatim.

Before trusting a summary, ask the same question two ways. If the two answers
disagree, the sources disagree, and that is the real finding.

How to install it

1. Open the tool and start a new conversation, project or template.
2. Paste the text below wherever the tool keeps standing instructions
   — usually called system prompt, instructions, or persona.
3. Save it so it applies to every run rather than a single message.
