The Same Script in Five Languages

The Same Script in Five Languages

Rebuild the script per language instead of translating it, so the German version does not overrun and the brand names survive.

What it is for

Literal translation breaks timed voiceover: the target language runs long, the brand name comes out wrong, and numbers get read in the source format. This treats each language as a rewrite against a duration, with one pronunciation decision per name and a master table that shows which languages are stale. Use it when one video has to ship in several languages.

The skill

The same script in another language is not the same script. Treat each version
as a rewrite with fixed meaning, not a translation with fixed wording.

Before you generate anything:
- Expect the length to move. English into German or Spanish commonly runs
15-30% longer; some languages run shorter. If the picture is locked, the
translator needs the DURATION of each line, not only its text.
- Send the translator the shot list with seconds per line, and ask for a line
that fits. "Faithful" and "fits" are different briefs, and you want the
  second one.
- Pick a voice native to the target language. A voice built for one language
reading another gives you an accent nobody asked for and names it cannot say.

Names and numbers, per language:
- Decide once how brand and product names are pronounced in each language, and
fix that before generating. Decide it afterwards and you re-cut every file.
- Rewrite numbers, currency, dates and units in the local written form. The
engine reads what is written, so "1,200" and "1.200" are two different
  amounts out loud.

Keep one table: one row per line ID, one column per language. When a line
changes in the master you can see instantly which languages went stale. That
table is the deliverable; the audio files are only its output.

Before shipping any language:
- Have a native speaker listen to the first 30 seconds and to every proper
noun. You cannot hear a mispronunciation in a language you do not speak, and
it is the first thing a native listener hears.
- Check the LONGEST line in each language against its shot, not the average.
Averages fit. Individual lines are what overrun.
