Research That Stays in Your Jurisdiction

Research That Stays in Your Jurisdiction

Forces jurisdiction, court level, posture and date into the question, so the answer is binding law and not a confident tour of somewhere else.

What it is for

An AI research answer reads the same whether it is quoting your controlling court or a decision with no force where you practise. This puts jurisdiction, court level, posture and date inside the question, and makes the answer label binding authority separately from persuasive, holding separately from dicta. Reach for it before you read the answer, not after half the brief is written around it.

The skill

Answer this legal research question under the constraints below. Treat the
constraints as part of the question, not as preferences.

Matter facts: [two or three sentences, no client names]
Question: [the actual question]
Jurisdiction: [state / circuit / country, and court level]
Posture: [motion to dismiss, summary judgment, appeal, advisory]
Date: only authority good as of [date]

How to answer:
1. Open with the rule as the controlling court states it, then the citation.
2. Separate BINDING authority from persuasive. Label every case as one or the
other for MY jurisdiction. Never mix them in the same list.
3. For each case give the holding and the posture it arose in. If the language
I would want to quote is dicta, say it is dicta.
4. Name the split, if there is one, and say which side my court is on. If my
court has not decided it, write that in those words.
5. Give the strongest authority AGAINST my position, in the same detail.

Refusals I want:
- If there is no on-point authority in my jurisdiction, say "no on-point
authority found" and stop. Do not substitute another jurisdiction's law and
do not reason from first principles unless I ask for that.
- If the answer turns on a fact I have not given, ask for the fact instead of
  assuming a version of it.

Do not summarise a secondary source as though it were a holding. Anything you
cannot tie to a specific citation, mark UNSOURCED.
