Speaking You Can Do Without the App
A routine, not a prompt: answer aloud before you see the options, type wherever typing is offered, and reverse every translation.
What it is for
A session routine, not something you paste anywhere — keep it in a notes app or on a card by the phone. It converts tapping into speaking: answer aloud before you see the options, type wherever typing is offered, reverse every translation, and end the week writing sentences from memory. Use it once daily lessons have started feeling automatic. It prevents the well-known outcome where months of practice produce recognition but no ability to say anything unprompted.
The skill
A routine for a daily session, not a prompt. There is no field in the app to paste it into — keep it in a notes app or on a card next to the phone and work through it while you practise. On each exercise: - Cover the ready-made answer pieces with your thumb, or look away. Say the whole answer out loud in the target language first, then look and tap. - If your spoken answer differed from what you then tapped, that item is a miss even though it was marked correct. Write it down. Choose the harder direction: - Whenever you are given a text field instead of ready-made pieces, use it. Assembling pieces is recognition; typing is production. - When an exercise translates out of the target language, translate it back the other way afterwards, out loud, before continuing. That direction is the one a conversation will demand. - Repeat every listening exercise once with your eyes shut. Do three things no lesson will ask you for: 1. Say each new sentence aloud twice, at speaking speed, not reading speed. 2. Change one word in it - same structure, new noun or new person. If you cannot, you learned a phrase, not a pattern. 3. Use one sentence from today to say something true about your day, out loud, to nobody. It has to be a real statement about you. Once a week: - Take five sentences from the week and write them from memory with no app open. What you cannot write, you cannot say. Failure this prevents: a long streak, a high level, and complete silence the first time a real person asks you a real question.
