Notes That Turn Into Questions You Can Fail
Turn a chapter or lecture notes into questions, subtle false statements and a gap list instead of one more summary to reread.

Paste your notes, the chapter, or the lecture transcript, then this. Turn this material into a study set. Do not summarize it - I already have the summary, that is what I pasted. Produce, in this order: 1. Twelve questions I could get wrong. Four asking for a definition, four asking me to apply an idea to a situation not in the text, four asking me to say why two ideas are not the same. Number them. No answers yet. 2. Five statements that are false in a subtle way, each wrong for a different reason. I have to say what is wrong with each. 3. The answer key, after all the questions, with the line or paragraph of my own material each answer comes from. 4. A list of anything you needed in order to answer these that was NOT in what I pasted. That list is my gap, and it is the most useful part. Rules: - Do not add facts, dates, names, or figures absent from my text. If the material is thin, say so; do not fill it in. - Word the questions differently from my notes, so I cannot pattern-match my way to an answer. Then do the work: answer all of them on paper before you look at the key. Anything you got right by recognizing the phrasing counts as wrong. Redo those three days later, from the question only. Failure this prevents: rereading a tidy summary four times, feeling ready, and meeting the first exam question that asks you to use the idea rather than repeat it.
