Ad Copy Worth Testing, Not Just Generating

Ad Copy Worth Testing, Not Just Generating

A brief template that gets specific copy back, plus a fast reject test: swap in a competitor's name and see if the headline still works.

What it is for

A fill-in brief that makes generated ad copy specific, and the review test that kills the generic survivors - swap in a competitor's name and see whether the headline still stands. Use it before generating, and again on the output. It prevents paying for impressions on copy that could belong to anyone, and on claims a platform will reject.

The skill

Use to write the input, before you ask for creatives or copy.

A generator hands back the specificity you gave it. Vague in, generic out -
and generic is what you pay for on every impression.

Paste and fill:
Product: [what it is, in the words a customer would use]
Audience: [who, and what they are doing when they see this]
The problem: [one specific pain, not three]
The offer: [the number - price, saving, time, quantity]
Proof: [rating, count, guarantee, a named result]
Call to action: [the one next step]
Never claim: [anything unproven, plus your regulated words]
Avoid these words: [the ones every competitor already uses]

Judge the output against this and reject fast:
- Swap your brand name for a competitor's. If the headline is still true, it
says nothing. Send it back with a sharper offer line.
- Replace every superlative with the number it stands in for. "Amazing
savings" is worth less than "saves four hours a week".
- Delete claims you cannot evidence today. Health, income, earnings and
before-and-after language sit in the categories ad platforms restrict - read
the platform's own policy before you spend on them.
- Check the first four words. On a phone that may be all that shows.
- Read it aloud. Copy that scans smoothly on screen is often three clauses
  with no verb in them.

For another language, do not translate the winner. Refill the brief in that
language, with that market's pain and its own price expectation, and generate
again. Translated ad copy reads as imported.

Failure this prevents: paying for impressions on a headline that would be just
as true if a competitor had written it.
